Richmond Pearson Hobson: Naval Hero from Magnolia Grove
Published in Hardcover by Yucca Tree Pr (12 March, 2001)
Author: Harvey Rosenfeld
Average review score:

Biography of an unusual man who predicted political changes
Rear Admiral Richmond Pearson Hobson came into public prominence in 1898 when the Spanish-American War was not going well for the United States. Hobson undertook a seemingly suicide mission designed to sink the USS Merrimac in Santiago Harbor in Cuba and survived. This was a complex man who was both a romantic and deeply disillusioned, who had loyal friends and determined detractors, who experience high popularity and public rejection, wh was considered by some as an extremely moral person and by others as a self-righteous crusader. This was also a man who became an Alabama Congressman, a Civil Rights advocate, a Women's Rights advocate, and an who advocated international drug controls and prohibition. Richmond Pearson Hobson: The Naval Hero From Magnolia Grove is the impressively researched and superbly presented, and highly recommended biography of an unusual man who predicted political changes well before they became reality and very strongly advocated the need for an American Naval power in the Pacific to deter the Japanese. A stance that brought him severe ridicule for forty years, until Pearl Harbor and the onslaught of World War II.

Sams Teach Yourself Mac OS X in 24 Hours
Published in Paperback by Sams (21 December, 2001)
Authors: John Ray and Robyn Ness
Average review score:

Easy to Read and Very Organized
Pros: While this manual is not as complete and technical as the phone-book size Missing Manual (Pogue), it is very detailed. It is written in language anyone can understand with many clear screenshot llustrations. I think it would be an excellent book for someone who is very new to Apple OS X. I have been using Macs for more than ten years. I bought this after using OS X (and now Jaguar) for over a year and I learned how to take care of some annoying things and also how to use many things I didn't know I had. It is laid out as 24 chapters (thus the 24 hour title) clearly named in the Table of Contents so you can easily find what you are looking for. The chapters end with a summary and a helpful Q & A section that often covers troubleshooting questions. These are followed by Workhop (practice), Quiz questions and Activities. Almost every option from the file menus of every program is defined in simple English as you learn about the program.
Cons: Some of the programs have been updated either with Jaguar or with downloads and these latest features or options aren't covered. As I said before it is not as technical as others, i.e. you will not find sections on Bluetooth.

Season of innocence : the Munroes at the Barnacle in early Coconut Grove
Published in Unknown Binding by Pickering Press ()
Author: Deborah A. Coulombe
Average review score:

Quick read, obscure subject
The book is a quick read about the life of South Florida pioneer Ralph Munroe and his family. For me it is interesting because I live near Ralph Munroe's homestead, now a Florida state park called The Barnacle. But to others, the story of Ralph Munroe and his family appeals on a different level. The timeless values of the man and the way they have endured in his family are something of universal appeal. This book may also appeal to sailing afficionados interested in learning about Munroe, who was an early proponent and proliferator of the Sharpie style of sailboats, as well as being the Commodore of the Biscayne Yacht Club.

Brent's Idea On Pilot Grove
I was captivated by the book as soon as I saw the cover. Having an expectation of what the book was like, I opened it and recieved an unexpected book. What I thought was going to be a historical account of what went on in Pilot Grove since the turn of the century, turned out to be one persons account of how he grew up, and became a man during some of the most troubling times of our country. The very details that he remembered and captured into words concerning some of the littlest things and the biggest things that he did. Such as when he used to by ice cream in the local ice cream parlor, or when he worked on the railroad when he was just fifteen years old. He described how he managed a crew of older men that could well have been his grandfathers with such detail, that I felt like I was right there with him. I felt a sense of aw when he related his motor cycle troubles with the reader. I was in complete attention when he commanded a quad fifty-caliber machine gun in Korea, and especially when he unleashed a halo of fire into a bunker of Chinese, that were trying to take out his entire unit. I felt saddened when he came back to a town that had changed so significantly, by taking out the railroad, the one thing that had meant so much to him, and his father. I think that the raw feelings of this man's story was there, and if somebody else were to read the book they would be in agreement with me. Thank you.

When the Going Was Good: A Guide to the 99 Best Narratives of Travel, Exploration, and Adventure
Published in Paperback by Scarecrow Press (January, 2003)
Author: Grove Koger
Average review score:

A Great a Guide for those who like to Go!
If you are a traveler, or a lover of travel writing, When the Going Was Good will be a great reference for you! In this book Grove Kroger reviews 99 of the best works of travel literature of all time. He whisks the reader from Siberia to Patagonia, and from Mecca to Xinjiang, from atop mountains to deserts and into the sea. Travel experiences range from hiking, hunting and sailing to collecting plants and animals. Whether Kroger is an armchair voyager, or has himself trekked to the four corners one cannot tell. His writing is engaging and his vast reading in this genre is obvious. His suggestions for works on similar topics or places show an amazing breadth and depth of knowledge.

Please know Kroger has not selected flowery sweet vacation accounts, but he defines "best" as the firsts, the real first reports on places before unknown and those accounts that have literary merit. Norman Douglas said the reader "is entitled not only to an exterior voyage, . . . but to an interior" as well. If you enjoy Dinesen, Saint-Exupery, Mayle, Mayes or Shackleton please look to this book for excellent recommendations to read further works by them or to learn about works written about similar settings. Best editions are suggested, as are works similar in scope, and suggestions for further information.

We shove off on these journeys, leaving the sofa or the continent, out of a desire to experience the otherworldly. We want to know a "heightened" living, not our day to day toil at home, wherever home may be. Kroger quotes D.H. Lawrence in his introduction who says it most simply, "Comes over one an absolute necessity to move."

Who Was Traded for Lefty Grove?: Baseball's Fun Facts and Serious Trivia
Published in Paperback by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (April, 2002)
Author: Mike Attiyeh
Average review score:

Intelligent fun
This is a book for the thinking fan. This is not some ordinary, garden variety baseball trivia book. Rather, this book is filled with an amazing amount of research and it is borne out in the facts and figures that accompany every "question" in the book. Each question serves in part as part of a trivia game, but also simply is the header for detailed discussions on a wide variety of very interesting topics related to the history of the game. A definite must-read for any baseball fan, and a great holiday gift!
